As one of the projects for my artist in residency at the McGill Department of Integrated Studies in Education, I collaborated with Dr. Fiona Benson as part of her Special Topics course EDEC 300: Learning from doing pop up with the youth.

As a project manager, I wanted to give the students an opportunity to view teaching art in a different light, to get out of the academic perspective and explore art-facilitating in different stimulating environments across the city. From my experiences, I was able to act as an artistic mentor and help them through this process.

Student/teachers, Jaereem Lee, Chloé Corrado, Galit Sandaev, Parvesh Chainani, and Jane Ding were placed in 7 different community centers : YMCAs in NDG, Pointe-Claire, Peel, Parc avenue, Westmount, Tyndale Community Centre, and La maison des jeunes l'escalier de Lachine. The workshops took place during 3 sessions, 6 hours each, throughout the months of December, February and March.

For many of the students it was their first time experiencing this aspect of facilitating art projects with kids and teenagers from different backgrounds and from all over the city of Montreal. Student/teachers were able to engage the interest of the youth and create an environment where kids and teenagers were stimulated creatively by learning new techniques and experimenting with new and old materials.

This project would not have been possible without the amazing collaboration of all the community centres involved. They were all very open to every idea that the students brought forward. Also, I would like to thank Dr. Fiona Benson for all of her great guidance and experience in this project. She allowed the students liberty to create their activities while at the same time giving them all the tools to succeed.

I would like to give a special acknowledgement to the McGill Department of Integrated Studies in Education for believing in this outreach program that has developed a link between the McGill art education community and Montreal youth.

For the occasion, you are all invited to the first YOUTH POP-UP ART EVENT featuring the work of the youth from all over Montreal and the student-teachers:

Thursday April 21 @ the Education Curriculum Resource Centre/Library space, 1st floor Education Building, 3700 McTavish, fom 4:30 to 6 pm.
